The country – Dominican Republic: The Dominican Republic, the second largest Caribbean nation after Cuba, neighbours Haiti, the least developed country in the western hemisphere. The country was first explored by Columbus in 1492, and its capital, Santo Domingo (1496) is the oldest European settlement. During colonial times, the island saw difficult days of brutality, conspiracy and downfall, follow by a poor economy and political instability even after gaining independence in 1844. Today, the country is improving with the help of the agriculture and tourism industries. The country’s official language is Spanish.
